Christmas is not on the top of my list for favorite holidays. I have various reasons for my lack of spirit and I have no idea where it roots from. It's just ho-hum to me. I don't hate it. I just don't LOVE it the way everyone else seems to. And the idea of Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving makes me want to gag myself with a spoon.
Things I do enjoy about Christmas include Nativity Sets, reading the story of the birth of Christ from the Bible, specific Christmas music (not including Feliz Navidad, Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, ...Two Front Teeth, etc.), and the spirit of giving. So pretty much I don't like the commercialism.
Another thing I enjoy about Christmas - the book Skipping Christmas. Nearly every year for the past six or so I've read the it. It is one of my favorite books. I really like the sarcastic and dry attitude of the main character Luther. I feel that I can really identify with him when it comes to my opinions of Christmas. This year I'll be listening to it on CD and am very excited to hear how it is read.
They made a movie based on the book, "Christmas with the Kranks." I think the director's interpretation was far off and frankly it was a dumb movie. If you've seen it and were turned off by the slap-stick and silly humor - you should give the book a try. The humor is different and you'll get a different vibe. I would never have casted Tim Allen as Luther. I imagined someone more like Micheal Douglas. And as far as Nora - not Jamie Lee Curtis. I'd pick someone like Sally Field. I'm still upset that the movie was such a disappointment to me.
It has been my dream nearly every Christmas to pack things up and go else where for the holiday. I have had the opportunity to do so in the past but I think the opportunity in the future looks dim. I haven't been brave enough to suggest it to Wyatt but I don't think he'll go for the idea. So I guess I won't be skipping Christmas anytime soon...
By the way, if you're interested in learning my opinions about other books I've read, Wyatt and I both have an account at Shelfari.com. You'll have to create an account to view my "Shelf". However, it'd be sort of like a book club and I can view all the books you've read and read your recommendations.

I'm pro leaving the country for Christmas. This will be the third wonderful year. Ecuador still believes in Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving, but I figured it's just because they don't have Thanksgiving. I'm still trying to teach them. You should tell Wyatt, maybe he'll get hooked too. I'm glad we were mutually stalking eachother.
I hope my Christmas decorations did not cause you to gag yourself with a spoon. That would have been gross!! And, I'll feel bad if you did.
We just watched the movie Christmas with the Kranks. Not my favorite.
Hopefully you have a great holiday season!!
Brittany, I for one believe that "Gramma Got Runover by a Reindeer" gets funnier every year. By the time I'm 80 I'll pee my pants every time I hear it. Of course there may be many other factors to this urination at such an age.
In all truth (and I realize this is my choice) Christmas makes me a bit homesick.
I'm with you. I am so, so, so sick of the commercialism. I feel trapped by it every year. If I was rich, I would fly my family to a third world country for christmas where we would participate in a medical mission or teach people how to build a well or something. (not that I know how, but you get the drift).
I hear you can buy a goat for someone in a third world country and give to to them as a way for them to make money selling the milk and stuff. Sounds like a good idea for the non-rich person in me.
Good luck with your scrooginess, come to utah and we can be irritable together.
Britty,
the Christmas issue was a big one for Bill and I when the kids were little. I was really into it and he thought it had become too commercialized. We reached a happy compromise and now I only use nativity sets or snowmen. I did like the fact that Pres Monson talked about Santa in his message on Sunday. I think the spirit of giving is great. Bill gives the something to World Vision in their name. They are touched each year. This year we're going to look into Kiva.com (or it might be org.) Check it out. It's a wonderful way to be a part of a third world country and follow their progress. Find your way of loving the season and then build your traditions on that. Enjoy
I'm glad that you like me enough to not be disgusted by my pre-thanksgiving decorations. The half eaten gingerbread ornaments make so much more sense!! Just kidding.
Wow I had no idea! All weekend it was christmas this and that and at FHE! Well sorry if we over did it but i LOVE everything about it...its ok we can still be friends!
hey, you're like the little girl in "miracle on 34th street"
